Following the Great Migration

Overview

The Great Migration is the largest movement of animals on Earth. Well over a million wildebeest, together with hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, follow the rains in a great clockwise loop through the Serengeti and into Kenya and back, year after year. A migration safari places you exactly where the herds are at the time you travel.

What the journey is like

This is a journey that moves with the animals. Early in the year we take you to the southern plains for the calving, when thousands of wildebeest are born each day and the predators are never far. Later we follow the herds north to the Grumeti and Mara rivers for the dramatic crossings. We use camps positioned for the season, some of them mobile, so you wake up close to the action.

When to go

Calving on the southern plains falls around January and February. The river crossings in the north usually happen between July and September. We plan the route around the month you travel.
