Zanzibar

White-sand shores, warm water, and the old streets of Stone Town.

Overview

Zanzibar is where most journeys end, and rightly so. The archipelago lies off the coast in the warm Indian Ocean, a world of white-sand beaches, turquoise water and a thousand years of trading history. The main island, Unguja, is fringed with beaches and centred on the old trading city of Stone Town.

What you will see

Zanzibar is about the ocean and the culture more than big game, though Jozani Forest protects the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found nowhere else. The reefs offer superb snorkelling and diving, and dolphins are often seen offshore.

When to go

The best weather falls in the dry months from June to October and again from December to February. The islands are warm all year.

Highlights
