Tarangire National Park

Overview

Tarangire is quieter than its famous neighbours, and all the better for it. The park follows the Tarangire River through open savannah and ancient baobab trees, some well over a thousand years old. It covers around two thousand eight hundred square kilometres, and in the dry season it comes alive.

What you will see

Tarangire is elephant country. In the dry months the herds gather along the river in their hundreds, one of the densest elephant populations in Tanzania. Lion, leopard, giraffe, zebra and a great variety of birds are all here, and the baobabs make for some of the most striking scenery in the country.

When to go

The dry season from June to October is the best time by far, when animals concentrate along the river. The wet season is greener and excellent for birds, though wildlife is more spread out.
