Overview
Ruaha is vast, remote and dramatic, the heart of a wild ecosystem in the centre of the country. Baobab-studded hills fall away to the Great Ruaha River, and the sense of space is extraordinary. Very few travellers make the journey, which is much of the appeal.
What you will see
Ruaha holds one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa and is famous for its lions, which live in some of the biggest prides found anywhere. It is a stronghold for leopard, cheetah and wild dog, and it sits where southern and eastern African species meet, so the wildlife is unusually varied.
When to go
The dry season from June to October is the finest, when animals crowd the shrinking river. The green season is beautiful and superb for birds.
