Overview
Nyerere is the largest national park in Tanzania and one of the largest in Africa, covering more than thirty thousand square kilometres of wilderness in the south. It was created from the northern part of the old Selous Game Reserve, and it is defined by the wide, slow Rufiji River winding through it.
What you will see
The Rufiji and its lakes and channels draw huge numbers of hippo and crocodile, along with elephant, buffalo, lion and the endangered African wild dog, which the south is one of the best places to see. The birdlife along the water is exceptional.
When to go
The dry season from June to October is the best time, when the bush thins and animals gather at the river. Many camps close during the heaviest rains from March to May.
