Overview
Mkomazi is a remote, semi-arid park in the north east, in the shadow of the Pare and Usambara Mountains and bordering Kenya's Tsavo. It is a place of dry, open plains and big skies, and it sees very few visitors, which is exactly why some travellers love it.
What you will see
Mkomazi is home to species you will not easily see elsewhere in Tanzania, including the fringe-eared oryx and the gerenuk, both suited to dry country. It also has an important black rhino sanctuary and a breeding programme for the endangered African wild dog.
When to go
The dry months from June to October and late December to February are best, when the bush is thinner and animals gather at water.
