Overview
Mikumi is the most accessible of the southern parks, a straightforward drive from Dar es Salaam, which makes it a fine introduction to the south. Its heart is the Mkata Floodplain, a wide, open grassland often compared to the Serengeti, ringed by distant mountains.
What you will see
The open plains make for easy game viewing. Zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe and elephant are all readily seen, along with lion and, with luck, the resident wild dog. The floodplain is especially good for watching wildlife against a dramatic mountain backdrop.
When to go
Good all year, with the dry season from June to October offering the easiest viewing. The green season brings lush scenery and excellent birding.
