Overview
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, rising to five thousand eight hundred and ninety-five metres. The park protects the whole mountain above the tree line, and the climb passes through five distinct climate zones, from rainforest to arctic summit.
What you will see
The lower forest is home to blue monkeys, colobus and the occasional elephant, though most climbers come for the mountain rather than the wildlife. Higher up, life thins to hardy alpine plants and, near the top, bare rock and ice.
When to go
The clearest, driest months are January to mid-March and June to October. We avoid the heaviest rains of April, May and November.
