Arusha National Park
Forest, lakes and Mount Meru. An easy, beautiful first day close to town.
Overview
Arusha is one of the most beautiful and least visited of the northern parks, and it sits close to the town where most safaris begin. It is a compact park of great variety, taking in the slopes of Mount Meru, montane forest, the Ngurdoto Crater and the shallow Momela Lakes.
What you will see
This is a park for gentle game viewing and walking rather than big predators. Giraffe, buffalo, zebra and warthog are common on the plains, hippos wallow in the lakes, and the forest is home to black-and-white colobus monkeys. Flamingos often gather on the Momela Lakes.
When to go
Good all year. The dry season from June to October gives the clearest views of Mount Meru, with Kilimanjaro beyond it.
Highlights
- Walking safaris on foot with a ranger
